We build products in large quantities for distribution all over North America. Some regions, such as the State of California, require by law that furniture and household items that contain small particles of wood dust, brass, PVC and other elements be marked with a warning that the item could contain an ingredient they deem a toxicant. This is in keeping with California’s Safe Drinking and Toxic Enforcement Act, or Proposition 65.
The Proposition was originally intended to protect drinking water sources from chemical contamination. As the years passed the scope of the proposition expanded. The LA Times wrote recently, “Warnings [about Proposition 65] are everywhere: parking lots, hardware stores, hospitals and just about any decent-sized business.” Proposition 65 requires warnings to be placed on the website of any maker or distributor of products into the State of California that contain any of the over 900 chemicals the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment lists as a carcinogen or a reproductive toxicant.
Many of the chemicals listed are found in common everyday items, such as jewellery accessories, lighting products, ceramic and glassware, electrical equipment, beauty products and automobiles.
There is always a possibility that wood dust or some other of the hundreds of chemicals listed in Proposition 65 could be on our furniture or packaging. Additionally, the law requires the maker or distributor to use exact wording for this warning: “This product can expose you to chemicals including [name of California Prop 65 substance], which is known to the State of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm."
This is why we place these warning labels on all of our products.
