UPHOLSTERY
Frame Construction | built for living
Our upholstery frames are made of Aspen softwood and Birch hardwood, OSB (Oriented Strand Board), masonite and plywood. All are pinned and glued for strength and durability.
Seating Comfort | get cozy
Depending on the design and function, we use 3 types of seating suspension.
- Italian Webbing – for a sleek, streamlined look with soft support. We use it in all our seatbacks, and in the seats of our most iconic chairs, the Matt and James Rockers.
- Sinuous No-Sag Spring Suspension – for a more comfy look with medium soft support, it is long-lasting and durable. We use it in all our seats.
- Foam with plywood sub-structure – for a sleek, streamlined look with firm support – we use this on smaller seating surfaces like dining chairs and ottomans.
High Resiliency Foam | support in all the right places
We use High Resiliency foam in all our seating. By layering and combining different densities, we achieve the perfect comfort and support. High Resiliency foam recovers more quickly from depressions and it offers better comfort without the loss of any support. It is more environmentally friendly too, as it is manufactured without the use of highly volatile, ozone depleting CFC's, or carcinogenic compounds.*
Glue | take a deep breath
We use a water-based spray adhesive to secure the layers of foam in our seating. These adhesives are much more benign than conventional methylene chloride solvent-based adhesives and they have virtually no residual odor.
Wood Feet | a small footprint
All our wood feet are made of solid Rubber wood sourced from government-owned plantations that replant for every log cut. They are finished with a water-based stain; a non-petroleum based process that is cleaner, non-toxic and low-emission. This ensures a more environmentally friendly product that is healthier for you and the people making them.
Fabric | sitting pretty
We want our fabrics to age gracefully, so before we add a new fabric, we submit it to a number of rigorous tests.
- Abrasion – measures durability and wearability
- Pilling – the resistance to balling of fibres
- Colourfastness to Light – resistance to fading
- Crocking – measures colour transfer
- Tear Strength – resistance to tearing
- Seam Strength – measures seam integrity under pressure
* Read the fine print and relax
All of our High Resiliency foams and our fabrics meet the strict requirements of California which has the highest flammability standards in North America. More and more of our customers are aware of the need for products that are safer under fire conditions and are less likely to ignite accidentally. We share the same concerns, and globally, all of our customers benefit. In keeping with our efforts to manufacture furniture that is environmentally friendly, we meet California flammability compliance on all our seating without the use of any fire retardant chemicals that contain harmful Poly-Brominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE's).
CASEGOODS
Going Green
Our range of eco-friendly products keeps growing with our new CORE dining and bedroom programs. Incorporating sustainable initiatives throughout manufacturing, these products promote a cleaner planet, provide a healthier work environment for our factory employees and create a healthier, eco-conscious home for our customers.
FSC Certification
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization that promotes responsible forest management. The FSC seeks to end deforestation through monitoring and promoting sustainable forestry management policies. The Red Oak veneer used in our CORE bedroom and dining programs is FSC certified, ensuring responsible production and consumption of forest products.
Sustainable Harvested Rubber Wood
Rubber wood is a bi-product of rubber trees used to produce latex and rubber. Harvesting this bi-product utilizes a natural resource that is often thrown out or burned. Rubber wood is a strong, hard wood with the same density as Ash or Maple. We source Rubber wood from government regulated plantations for use in our CORE dining program.
Water Based Finishes
Our CORE bedroom program features 2 water based finishes - Earth and Onyx. These long-lasting finishes provide excellent surface protection in addition to providing significant health benefits for people while protecting our planet.
- During Production: Water based finishes release 95% fewer hazardous emissions during production and do not contain harmful petroleum products. This greatly improves indoor air quality and creates a healthier work environment for factory employees.
- At Home: Many furniture products with a conventional oil based finish emit a potent, chemical smell once unpacked; this process is called off-gassing. It occurs due to the high level of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that are found in conventional oil based finishing methods. VOCs are harmful substances that easily evaporate into the atmosphere during manufacturing and throughout a product's life. Water based finishes contain significantly lower levels of VOCs, resulting in products that are relatively odourless due to little or no off-gassing. It is beneficial to reduce VOCs as they can potentially cause eye, skin and lung irritation, in addition to causing headaches and nausea.

- Board-on-frame is a sandwich construction consisting of a hollow core surrounded by a frame of wood board. It uses less timber than solid wood construction and is friendlier for the environment. The sandwich structure is very strong, providing visual mass without adding weight to the product.
- Engineered Wood is made from the chips, fibers and waste that remain after a tree is milled into lumber. Particle board and MDF are engineered wood products.
- Particleboard is an engineered wood board made from compressed wood chips, fibers and glue. We use it in our board-on-frame and veneer products.
- MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is an engineered wood board made from compressed wood fibers and glue. MDF is a stable, uniform material that does not shrink or expand. We use it for our lacquer products.
- Solid Wood is a single board or plank, or several boards or blocks, glued together.
- Veneer is a thin sheet of wood applied to a core of engineered wood.
- Tempered Glass is heated and cooled rapidly to make it stronger than regular glass. When it is broken, it shatters into small pieces that do not have sharp edges. All of our glass is tempered.
- Lacquer is a clear or pigmented protective finish, applied as a top coat that often provides shine.
